The Series

Soma is a school of Structural Integration, a technique of bodywork developed by Ida P. Rolf.

The structure, strokes, and movement of a Soma session provide sensory input to the connective tissue and nervous system.  This allows for the release, reorganization, and ease of the human structure in gravity.

Experience the transformative power of a full 11 session series, a modified 3 series, or schedule a Somassage™ or treatment session for a sample of the work.  Clients are under no obligation to complete the full series.

A Soma client wears a comfortable outfit to facilitate movement on and off the table such as a swimsuit or sports bra.

A Soma session typically lasts 90 minutes.  The cost for one session is $120.

The Sessions

Session 1: Breath

“The body is solid material wrapped around the breath.”
Ida Rolf

Session 1 focuses on improving access to breath. Lift through the chest, freedom of movement between the ribs and diaphragm, and defining the separation between arms and thorax are the goals of this session.

Session 2: Foundation

By working deeply into the feet, lower legs and knees clients experience a new connection to the Earth.  Establishing a dynamically stable stance allows the body to more easily transmit force, making movement feel smoother and more powerful. We begin developing a new relationship with the gait cycle and explore new ways of walking.

Session 3: Side Lines

"When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through.  Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself."

-Ida Rolf

By working with the full span of tissue from the ankles to the skull, session 3 begins shifting the head, shoulders, hips and ankles into a vertical line.  We begin going deeper into the fascia of the body and emphasizing the internal experience of the session.

Sessions 4, 5, & 6:  The Core

The core sessions systematically address the deeper fascial structures of the body.  With the goal of balancing the pelvis in gravity, we work on all of it's connections, from the more superficial hamstrings to the deep flexors of the psoas and iliacus.  We seek an even push and pull, a tensegrity, in the deep tissues surrounding the spine and pelvis.

Session 7: Neck and Head

Now we work to balance the head over the rest of the body's structure.  This is a novel and powerful session for many clients.  We work the deeper tissues of the neck and internal muscles of the jaw.

Sessions 8, 9, 10, & 11: Integration

"An effective human being is a whole that is greater than the sum of it's parts" - Ida Rolf

The goal of these sessions is to revisit and more deeply establish the new neural connections and movement options made available to the body.  We focus on movement and work into and across joint structures.  We revisit and strengthen new habits of thought and action that have been discovered through the process of the series.
